Good morning Carrboro High School, my name is Myasia Jarrett. February is Black History Month. Throughout this month, we will honor a new generation of black leaders and black poets on the announcements. Each day, we will celebrate the legacy of black Americans through either the reading of a poem or of a brief bio of an inspirational black figure.

W.E.B DuBois

Born on February 23rd 1868 DuBois would grow up to become the first African American to obtain a Doctorate Degree. Soon after this accomplishment DuBois started speaking out against racism and Jim Crow laws as an advocate for social justice and became the figure-head of the Niagara Movement. In 1909 he became the co-founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). DuBois was also a prolific writer, with some of his most well known pieces being The Souls of Black folks and Black Reconstruction in America.
