Student announcements - Feb. 28, 2017

Good morning,

The month of February is designated to acknowledge the achievements made by African American people throughout history.  To honor Black History Month,  each day, we will recognize a historic figure that has helped society for the better. Today’s person of the day is:
  • A. Philip Randolph is considered the most important civil rights leader that emerged from the labor movement. He put the interests of black workers at the forefront of his racial agenda. He was constantly calling out unions for discrimination and worked to improve the lives of all African American workers. 

Please join us in congratulating the Model UN club for their participation and performance in the recent UNC Model UN Conference.  Of the 16 who participated, 3 CHS Jaguars received awards!
Isabel Simmons got verbal commendations for SOCHUM -- at her very first Model UN Conference no less!
Ester Rimanyi received best delegate in SECPOL.
Taylor Gosk and Michael Donovan received outstanding delegate in UNEP.


CHS students competed at the  UNCG in the regional Science Olympiad.
Overall the varsity team placed 9th out of 30 teams.
The following individuals placed in individual events:

Codebusters, 4th place -  Shai Caspin, Ojas Patwardhan, James O'Brien

The winner of the 2017 Project Graduation T-Shirt design is Carrboro’s very own: Sofia Dimos. Her design was selected from over 30 submissions entered by East, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro students. Congrats Sofia!

Do you sing?  Would you like to sing even better?  You can just sign up for Concert Chorus.  For more of a challenge, consider honors level choir classes next year.  There is a 10 minute audition required.  Se Ms. Johnson in C-111 for details OR google “CHS chorus and orch” and look under auditions for all that you need to prepare.  Audition sign ups will be on the bulletin board outisde C-111 for dates in March.

Attend an elegant evening at your Great Gatsby Prom on April 22nd at Chatham Mills. Tickets are $95 for a couple and $60 for a single. They can be purchased on Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's during lunch.

Do you need help with scholarship essays, creative writing essays and research papers.Writing coaches are now available in the library during smart lunch on Wednesday.  Sign up in the library to reserve a spot.

Good morning,

  • Barbara C. Jordan was the first black woman elected to the Texas state senate and the first black texan in congress. She gave the influential first speech of Richard Nixon’s impeachment hearings. She retired after three terms in congress.

  • Althea Gibson was the first African-American women’s tennis player. She was a trailblazer for women’s tennis and eventually went on to become the first black winner of both Wimbledon and the French and US open. She was inducted into the international tennis hall of fame in 1971.

Good morning,


The month of February is designated to acknowledge the achievements made by African American people throughout history.  To honor Black History Month, Each day, we will recognize a historic figure that has helped society for the better. Today’s person of the day is:
  • Alex Haley was best known for his work in depicting the struggles of African Americans through writing. He began writing to help pass the time during his tenure as a part of the U.S. Coast Guard. Haley wrote both “Roots”, a fictionalized account of his own family's history. “Roots” was eventually turned into a TV miniseries and in 1977 became the most watched broadcast in TV history, a title it would hold for years.

Come out Friday night at 7:00 to our very first Mr. Carrboro Pageant. The show will be produced by Student Government and the Brothers Groups and is designed to promote school spirit, showcase student and faculty talent, and celebrate the best moments of Carrboro High School.  There will be special guest performances by Mrs. Uzun, Unnecessary Measures and more. Good morning,

The month of February is designated to acknowledge the achievements made by African American people throughout history.  To honor Black History Month, Each day, we will recognize a historic figure that has helped society for the better. Today’s person of the day is Huey Percy Newton:
  • Huey Percy Newton was born the youngest of seven kids February 17, 1942 in Monroe Louisiana. Newton grew up in Oakland and attended Merritt College where he met Bobby Seale who later joined him in founding the Black Panther Party with its purpose to protect the black communities.

  • Madam C.J Walker was born on December 23, 1867. After suffering from a scalp ailment that resulted in her own hair loss, she invented a line of African American hair care products in 1905. Her business venture made her to be one of the first American women to become a self-made millionaire.

Good morning,

Martin Luther King Jr. (2/17)
  • Martin Luther King Jr. is perhaps the most well known civil rights activists in America, who led the largest civil rights movement in history. His ideals of equality of treatment no matter skin nor creed still carry weight today.


The ASVAB-----Any Junior or Senior interested in taking the ASVAB exam for entrance into the military branches, the test will be given at Chapel Hill High School at 8:45 a.m. on April 12th. You will need to provide your own transportation. Please email or see Dr. Wooten in the CIC-Student Services if you have any questions.  


The National Technical Honor Society--- The Career and Technical Education Department is currently accepting applications for the Induction of Members for 2016-2017.   To be considered for NTHS you must have a 3.0 overall weighted GPA, an average GPA of 3.5 or higher in all CTE classes, at least one CTE class completed and currently enrolled in another CTE class, and finally a recommendation from a CTE department member.  You may get an application from any CTE teacher or pick one up in the CIC.  See Dr. Wooten or Dr. Arthurs if you have questions.

  • DeRay Mckesson is a civil rights activist known as an integral member of the Black Lives Matter movement. He helped to launch a policy platform focused on ending police violence called Campaign Zero.

Thurgood Marshall (2/15)
  • Thurgood Marshall was born on July 2, 1908 and died on January 24,1993. He was instrumental in ending legal segregation and was the first African American justice of the Supreme Court.

  • James Baldwin
  • Writer and playwright James Baldwin was born August 2, 1924, in Harlem, New York. One of the 20th century's greatest writers, Baldwin broke new literary ground with the exploration of racial and social issues in his many works. He was especially well known for his essays on the black experience in America.

Come to the Cabaret!  Thursday night February 15, at 7 pm on the stage of the Theater. Come to an evening of original music and words by Carrboro students.  Admission - free.

On Monday , Tuesday and Wednesday of next week counselors will conduct registration meetings for freshman, sophomores and juniors respectively. On Monday freshmen with last names A-M will meet during A lunch and students with last names N-Z will meet during B lunch. Sophomores will meet  Tuesday and Juniors will meet Wednesday with the same alphabetical split. The registration period will end in mid March, 2017

The ASVAB-----Any Junior or Senior interested in taking the ASVAB exam for entrance into the military branches, the test will be given at Chapel Hill High School at 8:45 a.m. on April 12th. You will need to provide your own transportation. Please email or see Dr. Wooten in the CIC-Student Services if you have any questions.

The National Technical Honor Society--- The Career and Technical Education Department is currently accepting applications for the Induction of Members for 2016-2017.   To be considered for NTHS you must have a 3.0 overall weighted GPA, an average GPA of 3.5 or higher in all CTE classes, at least one CTE class completed and currently enrolled in another CTE class, and finally a recommendation from a CTE department member.  You may get an application from any CTE teacher or pick one up in the CIC.  See Dr. Wooten or Dr. Arthurs if you have questions.  

The month of February is designated to acknowledge the achievements made by African American people throughout history.  To honor Black History Month, Each day, we will recognize a historic figure that has helped society for the better. Today’s person of the day is:
Shirley Chisholm (2/14)
Shirley Chisholm was born on November 30th, 1924 and died on January 1st, 2005. She was the first black female to be elected to Congress in 1969.

Student announcements - Feb. 10, 2017


Good morning,

Diving State Championship was held on Wednesday this week, congratulations to Emery Hoos who placed 5th and to Claire McDaniels who won 2A State Championship placing first. Claire set a new 2A State diving record, congratulations ladies on your accomplishments this season! 

"CHS is partnering with East and Chapel Hill for the 2017 Dance Marathon for Charity! Join us on February 18th, from 6 to 12PM at East Chapel Hill High for an awesome, non-stop night of dancing, food and activities. Tickets will be sold in the front of the Library on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Complementary food, games, and a Dance Marathon T-shirt are included with the purchase of your ticket. Tickets are now $30 but will go up next week, so make sure you buy your tickets before the price goes up!"

"Want to send a friend, crush, or significant other a rose for Valentine's Day? For only 2 dollars you can buy a rose, with a custom note, to be delivered to them personally by your junior class council. Just look for the table set up by the library during lunch!"
