Student Announcements: October 4, 2019

Howdy CHS students! It is time to find your mustang or filly and find your rowdiest rodeo outfit for our 2019 Homecoming celebrations. This year's celebrations will include a tailgate at 5pm with FREE food, live music, backyard games, and live animals. We will then march together to the football game to cheer the Jags to victory, then return to the commons for our rodeo hoedown. Tickets are on sale TODAY 1 for $10 or 2 for $15.


High-achieving 10th and 11th graders:  There will be an informational meeting for those interested in applying for a Governor's School nomination on Tues. 10/8 at the beginning of lunch. Meet in Student Services right after 4th period.  Governor's school is a residential summer program for gifted students.  10th graders can apply for Choral or Instrumental Music or Dance, and 11th graders can apply for any discipline (English, Math, Natural Science, Social Science, Spanish or French, Art, and Theater, in addition to those other three).  Please contact Mr. Harkey if you are interested but cannot make this meeting. High-achieving 9th and 10th graders:  the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) is an unparalleled opportunity for academic and personal growth, particularly for students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education.  There will be a representative from NCSSM at CHS on Thurs. 10/17 to meet with interested students during lunch in the bandroom. You apply during your 10th grade year, but we invite 9th graders to hear about the opportunity, too.  See Mr. Harkey with any questions beforehand.

Motivated 10th and 11th graders: Middle College is a way for students to earn a career certificate, transferable college credits, or even a full Associate's degree FOR FREE while completing high school. If you are interested in learning more about Middle College or how to apply, please see their website and email Mr. Harkey. There will be an on-campus information session in November, date TBD.  Min. 2.5 unweighted GPA. 

12th graders:  October is Countdown to College Month in North Carolina.  CHS will host a College Application Week during the week of 10/21.  During that week, you can sign up to receive 1-on-1 assistance in the Media Center for a number of things regarding college admissions:  creating your CFNC account and completing the NC Residency Determination for in-state tuition, creating your CommonApp account and/or linking it to your Naviance account, establishing your FSA ID so that you can begin your FAFSA, applying to colleges, searching for scholarships, simply talking about what your options are for after graduation, and more.  You can make an appointment for that week at http://bit.ly/2khTZ5W, or lunches will have walk-in availability.  During this week only, certain 4-yr NC colleges will be waiving application fees for all applicants (students eligible for fee waivers can use those throughout the year) - see http://bit.ly/C2Cfreeapps to view which schools.


Wed. 10/23, from 6-8pm, CHS will host a Durham Tech-specific information session, to inform families about its certificate and degree programs, The Promise Scholarship ($2,000 guaranteed), 4-yr transfer options including the specific CSTEP and C3 partnerships with UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State, and more.  Assistance will also be provided to complete your application. Parents and guardians should attend with students, if possible, and students should bring your charged Chromebook. Spanish interpretation will be available. CARRBORO HIGH SCHOOL IS GOING TO GERMANY AND SWITZERLAND SPRING 2020.If interested, there will be a parent meeting on October 22 at 5:30 pm in room D114. Look for posters and flyers posted on walls all over our building to RSVP. Any questions talk to Dr. Morais in room D114.


Friendly reminder that Service Learning is a requirement for graduation. In case you are unaware, the website is: https://www.chccs.org/ServiceLearning   If you need to set up your account (or even cannot remember your log-in/password), you can go to https://letserve.com/   Click log-in. Enter in your school e-mail address and click "forgot password ?". Then you will have a new password e-mailed to you  You can then more easily add the LetServe app if you want..  The first set up may be easier from a computer/laptop. 


American University, University of South Carolina, George Washington University and  the University of Toronto will have representatives at Carrboro High next week. To attend these visits, sign up in the  CIC.


Try-outs for Girl's basketball will start Wednesday October 31 @ 4:00 pm.  You must have a current physical, register on school website register an athlete , and have all required forms and meet eligiblity requirements. You can see Coach Dillard if you have any questions.

Help support your Jaguar Football Team by coming out to our JAGUAR CAR WASH Fundraiser!!!  Get your car cleaned by the Jaguar football team this Saturday at Lumber and Fitch from 12 -3pm on N. Greensboro St.  Donations accepted!!!! We look forward to putting some JagSwag on your ride!


All Students interested in swimming and diving, please meet Monday, Oct. 7th in the weight room during lunch time. 


Attention Students who have registered for Swimming: Potential Team Members will be evaluated for three days beginning October 30 on the following criteria: 1) Perform all four strokes legally, 2) Dives into the pool, 3) Turns and 4) Time Trials on the 50 freestyle and 100 IM.
