Melissa Barry and Kara Watson received Bright Ideas Grants yesterday from Piedmont EMC. Melissa Barry received $635.61 which she plans to use when purchasing Science resources for her class. "I am absolutely thrilled to receive this grant. It will enable me to get hands-on Science materials - K'nex Education Sets for my students. Students will be able to build products that help them understand gears, machines, forces of nature, and solar energy. I plan to invite students from standard classes in to work with my students on the concepts. Everyone loves working with K’Nex!” This is another way to promote more opportunities for her students to interact with the general student population.
Kara Watson’s $1339 will be used by Daphne Montoya's Math Strategies students. These students will be building and programing Arduino robotic cars. “Students will create blueprints and unique designs for their cars, then build them with Legos. After building the cars they will test them with variables such as distance, resistance and velocity,” says Jody Smith, Media Specialist intern, who worked with Ms. Watson on the grant.
The Bright Ideas program, sponsored by North Carolina's Touchstone Energy cooperatives, provides grants directly to teachers to fund innovative learning projects not covered by traditional school financing. These are the first Bright Ideas Grants awarded at CHS.
